A boy thinking - Why do we serve God? What's in it for me?

My older son asked me one evening, "Daddy, why do we obey God? Why do we serve God? What's the benefit?

Have you ever wondered the same? Apostle Peter once asked the same question to Jesus - What's in it for me? We've left all and followed you. What's in it for us?

As the great leader that He is, Jesus did not rebuke him, rather He gave Peter a satisfying answer that made Peter never doubt what was his reward for following Jesus anymore. So, I set out to do the same.

First, we understand as Christians, that our hope transcends this world. Apostle Paul made that clear. Jesus also said, "I go to prepare a place for you."

But aside from heaven, any benefit here on earth? I'll list just 2

1) As humans, we appreciate our capability and intelligence, but even at the best of us, there is so much beyond our understanding. Who knows tomorrow of a certainty or who can guarantee the next hour without a doubt? Our knowledge is limited and regularly, we see the limits.

  • A billionaire whose private jet crashed, yet a child of God heard The HolySpirit speak to him not to go on the trip
  • A leading inventor who suddenly died of an incurable disease, and yet another lifted his hands to God in prayer and got healed supernaturally

There are things beyond the control of our minds and capacity. It's why we need the God who knows tomorrow clearer than we know yesterday.

2) The Bible tells us that God makes a distinction between those that serve him and those that do not. So, there are things people fight for and plan for and never get, yet a child of God who was not even asking for it gets it handed to them.

I have experienced this many times in my career and life. Things others struggled for that get handed to me almost effortlessly.

In a world of uncertainties, where experts turn liars and projections fail, be sure to anchor your trust on:

It pays to serve JESUS!
